How to generate CSR certificate in server (Linux/Cent OS)

This guideline we will talk about how to generate CSR Certificate in your Server. Using this way you can generate CSR certificate in your Linux, CentOS, and any Ubuntu System.

CSR certificate is necessary for generating the SSL certificate, without the CSR certificate, SSL certificate will not work.

Note: .key file is also important for install SSL certificate this will generate when you create CSR certificate.

Follow the below steps to generating CSR certificate.

  • Login into your server using SSH
  • Enter below command to your terminal

    Note: replace mydomain with your domain name.

    openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout mydomain.key -out mydomain.csr

  • You will be prompted to answer a series of questions, explained below.
  • Country Name – This is the two-letter abbreviation for your country. For example, United States would be US.
  • State or Province Name – This is the full name of the state your organization operates from. For example, this might be “California”.
  • Locality Name – Name of the city of your organization.
  • Organization Name – The name of your organization.
  • Organizational Unit Name – you can use a department name here. For example, “IT Department” or “Web Administration”.
  • Common Name – The domain name that you are purchasing a SSL certificate for. This must be a fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
  • Email Address – An email address that can be used as a point of contact for your domain. Be sure the address is valid!
  • A challenge password – An optional password to further secure your certificate.
  • An optional company name – Another optional step. Fill in your company name if you wish.
  • Your CSR file has now been generated!

Finding Your CSR

Take a look at the contents of your current working directory with the “ls” command. You should notice two new files ending with “.key” and “.csr” respectively.

 

Use .csr file you can generate your SSL certificate. keep both file safe place that will be used in SSL certificate installation.
